Pasture/forages from Barenbrug Seed

Popular varieties available from Barenbrug

BG-24T is a premier diploid, perennial ryegrass for grazing in the Upper Midwest. It is easy to establish, highly digestibility and palatable, plus winter hardy.

Tetra Plus Ryegrass - is a late maturing blend of 70% tetraploid and 30% diploid, making it a ideal choice of hay or silage. The digestibility of TetraPlus ryegrass has proven to raise milk production when compared to straight alfalfa haylage.

Green Spirit is an Italian Ryegrass combining  Diploid and Tetraploid ryegrass. Planted in the spring, it has no seed heads and is a high quality emergency feed. Also an excellent cover on interseeded crops.

Barfleo Timothy is a persistent variety with  high yields under grazing. It is very leafy with a wide leaf. Like all Timothy, it is rather slow to establish and summer production is limited.

Pradel Meadow Fescue is one of the few improved meadow fescue's. High yielding , good winter hardiness and has excellent disease resistance. Meadow Fescues are popular in Canada, but used little in the United States. It grows under cool, moist conditions, tolerates wet, occasionally flooded soils.

About Fescue

Tall Fescue is traditionally a very adaptable variety, winter hardy and persistent. In the past, many varieties contained a harmful fungus (endophytes). This fungus makes the plant less palatable and depresses animal performance and health. It has a very rough leaf with high lignin content. Efforts in recent years have led to softer leaf, higher yields, with much better palatability. Barenbrug carries all endophyte free fescues.

AlfaPartner a blend with 60% Tall Fescue selected for palatability and digestibility. This blend is quick to establish, preventing weeds from becoming a problem in a stand. It is Excellent  for  hay.

Barolex Fescue is the Cadillac of fescues for grazing. Selected for palatability, it has leaf quality almost equal to perennial ryegrass. It's soft leaf and dense sod, combined with the heat/drought tolerance of the fescues, makes it a good choice for part of the grazing farm.

Baridana Orchardgrass is a late maturing, winter hardy orchardgrass with excellent rust resistance. It will make dense sword without the typical 'clumps' of orchardgrass.

Alice White Clover is a large leaf variety which grows to the height of the canopy. It has shown tremendous nitrogen fixing benefits for the grass growing with it. Alice is persistent, winter hardy and produces stolons, so it will continue to fill in bare spots. Recommended planting rate of 2 to 3 pounds per acre with all of the grass pastures.

Forage Feast Chicory is best described as an herb, which has a long taproot making it drought resistant. Many have reported the positive animal health aspects of this high energy and high protein plant. This variety also resist bolting.

Understanding Ryegrass

Perennial Ryegrass - is the most important and widely used cool season forage grass in the world. It is persistent if fertility is good. It excels when rotationally grazed and regrows quickly after cutting.

1. Perennial Ryegrass is a true perennial when fertility is good and winterhardy varieties used. Many farmers will rejuvenate stands every three years, much like alfalfa stands

2. Italian Ryegrass is often referred to as an annual, but in reality it is a biennial. This means that it will not set seed heads the first year, but will grow vigorously producing more vegetative growth than other cool season grass. Depending on winter hardiness, this plant will likely winter kill after growing all fall, even after many frosts. Excellent for use as a rotation crop for plowdown or planting in areas the livestock have been wintered.

3. Annual Ryegrass is an annual which will establish quickly but then will set seed heads profusely. The low quality stems, limit it's use for forage production. It is recommended for special areas and over seeding pastures in the fall.

Diploid versus Tetraploid

Ryegrass varieties also vary in their growing style. Diploid varieties are shorter in height and denser for high quality pasture.

Tetraploid Varieties have  upright growth patterns, better for hay production or as a combination hay and graze.

Diploid = Dense            Tetraploid = taller
